TIPS FOR DEALING WITH CRAVINGS

What is a craving?
This is the feeling you get when you want a cigarette and this feeling is refused. This is the most common complaint reported by quitters. The most important things to remember about cravings is that if you ignore them, they will go away whether you have a cigarette or not – unfortunately, if you do, the craving will return. When you first stop smoking the craving will last for as long as it would have taken to smoke a cigarette (approximately 5 minutes). The longer the time since your last cigarette, the shorter the craving time. These symptoms should only last between 2 to 4 weeks.

What to do when you get that desperate craving!
Find something to do with your hands; phone someone and talk about anything; offer to do the washing up; clean your teeth for three minutes; give yourself a manicure; take some deep breaths and imagine fresh air going into your lungs, as you exhale slowly, let the tension flow out through your body. “Smoke the Fresh Air”.
Make sure you use positive thoughts, you will create stress if you thinking I must have a cigarette! Try thinking “If I wait another minute or two the craving will pass”. You will never notice the craving going, but will notice it coming back – so for it to some back, it must have gone away!

REMEMBER, “YOU CAN DO IT” DON’T GIVE IN!
Congratulate yourself every day you succeed!
Put something in your mouth. Keep sugar free or low calorie snacks available. Minty chewing gum or strong mints will distract your taste buds and help the craving pass. Get support. Phone or visit a friend who is sympathetic to your situation, or phone a helpline. These numbers are free! Tell them how you feel, they will help you. Go to a smoke-free environment e.g. cinema, swimming pool, skating rink or a friend’s house where you know you can’t smoke. Go somewhere that you won’t think about smoking. Do something physical. Go for a run; go swimming; do an exercise video; have a bath or shower or play football; go shopping.

Feeling Stressed?
Don’t feel guilty if you experience mood swings.
Some people feel short tempered, irrational and may find it difficult to concentrate. These are perfectly normal reactions to quitting such an addictive stimulant as nicotine. The tendency is to become self-critical, apologetic and have low self-esteem. Do not allow this to happen. The mood swings will pass, explain to your friends the reason for your behaviour and hopefully they will be supportive. Never allow yourself to return to smoking because of your moods - learn to relax.
CIGARETTES ARE THE CAUSE; NOT THE CURE OF MOOD SWINGS!

Quit smoking side effects

Quit smoking side effects

Most smokers who want to quit fail because of the quit smoking side effects, eliminating nicotine from your body is very hard and the battle can be harder than you think. Most quit smoking side effects are related to the blood sugar levels. Symptoms like inability to concentrate, dizziness or headaches may usually appear in the first three or four days. The quit smoking side effects are also called withdrawal symptoms and their intensity varies with each individual. All known statistics show that ex-smokers live longer and healthier than any smoker, and this should be a strong reason for anyone to quit. The battle with quit smoking side effects is tough particularly during the first days after quitting, you may feel irritable, confused, depressed or anxious. The cause for these quit smoking side effects is the reduced level of nicotine in the blood.

Some therapists recommend the use of nicotine inhalers, nicotine gums or patches since they release a small quantity of nicotine in the blood reducing the quit smoking side effects. Smokers who already suffer from depression or anxiety can hardly quit as they use cigarettes as a relief, in such cases psychological treatment is a must. Quit smoking side effects will be very hard to deal with for people with a stressful life, as nicotine has a relaxing effect on the human body. So in order to avoid severe quit smoking side effects the person should ask for professional help and attend ex-smoker discussions. Other quit smoking side effects which may appear include insomnia or putting on weight.

Specialists say that putting between 5 and 10 pounds of weight after you quit smoking is one of the normal quit smoking side effects. The weight problem is caused by the low levels of sugar in your blood. After smoking the nicotine passes into the blood in a matter of seconds releasing sugar reserves from the body, sugar is vital to the brain normal functioning. But the sugar passes from normal food to the blood in about 20 minutes. One quit smoking side effect is that you will feel the need to eat because your brain is asking for sugar. The problem that people don't understand is that no matter how much you eat the body will still need 20 minutes to pass the sugar to the brain, so theoretically it won't be a big difference between eating a candy or ten of them.

Quit Smoking, The Easy Way

For a long time you’ve planned to quit smoking because of its dangers and its sheer uselessness. But smoking isn’t just like any other habit. It affects your nerves, your heart, your entire body.
You have tried again and again to quit smoking, only to find yourself facing failure. What you need is techniques that will help you quit the habit.

1. Three times deep breath :
Inhale the deepest lung-full of air you can, and then, very slowly, exhale.

2. Drink lots of fluids:
Drink lots of water and fluids to help flush out the nicotine and other poisons from your body.

3. Avoid sugar,coffee & alcohol
Do your very best to stay away from sugar ,coffee and alcohol as these tend to stimulate the desire for a cigarette.

4. Oral substitute:
You can use cinnamon sticks or chewing gum as a substitute. Soon you will find that you wouldn’t even need these.

5. Regular exercise:
Change your normal routine – take time to walk or even jog around the block or in the local park. Go to a gym, sit in the steam or exercise.

6.Pamper yourself :
Go ahead and join a yoga class or maybe reiki – they're great! Get a one hour massage, take a long bath - pamper yourself. Get yourself involved in a hobby.

7. Ask for help:
Ask for support from co-workers, friends and family members
Ask friends and family members not to smoke in your presence.

8. Destroy cigarettes:
Hide all ashtrays and destroy all your cigarettes.

9. Write down:
Write down good things about being a nonsmoker - and then write out bad things about smoking. It really helps.

10. Affirm yourself :
Several times a day, quietly repeat to yourself the affirmation, "I am a nonsmoker."

11. Holding out :
It's important to understand that from time to time, you will still be suddenly overwhelmed with a desire for "just one cigarette." This will happen unexpectedly, during moments of stress, whether negative stress or positive (at a party, or on vacation). If you are unprepared to resist, succumbing to that "one cigarette" will lead you directly back to smoking.

In conclusion
Remember that if you quit you will live longer and feel better. Quitting will lower your chances of having a heart attack, stroke, or cancer. The people you live with, especially children, will be healthier. If you are pregnant, you will improve your chances of having a healthy baby. And you will have extra money to spend on things other than cigarettes.
